PS3 to replace PS2. Why?

I heard from my friend that Sony are going to stop making PS2s and their games because of the PS3. I think this is a bad idea. I’m not saying I dislike the PS3, (if it’s more modern I appreciate that), but the console and games are so expensive. I cannot afford them and neither can my friend. If PS2s wear out how are we supposed to play its’ games? You can play PS1 games on a PS2, but you cannot play PS2 games on a PS3. Why cannot Sony have both? What do the rest of you think? I’ve set up a Yahoo Group “Save PS2″ if anyone wants to join.

Your friend is an ignoramus. Sony are NOT stopping production on PS2s. They’re still selling as well as PS3s. Stopping that would be shooting themselves in the foot, AND thumbing their noses at tons of companies still making PS2 games. I’m not sure where your friend heard that, or why he thinks that, but he couldn’t be more wrong, and you just made a completely useless and unnessecary group, not to mention plugging other groups on this one is not allowed.

although your friend heard that from a GAME store person, that doesn’t make it fact. It was more likely that the GAME store person was just saying that ‘cus they pull more profit from PS3 games than PS2 games.

As sad as it is, GAME store employees often don’t know anything more about the industry than the people that come into the store. Often LESS than that. Sure, some of them care and know, but it’s certainly not a guarantee. And no, if the GAME store employee lies, they will NOT get into legal trouble. Nor will the store owner or the chain. The worst that can happen, and this ONLY if that same employee tells everyone who asks the same thing, AND the manager finds out, AND someone complains, etc… is that the employee will be given a stern talking to. If they’ve
done it before, probably a suspension, or if it’s really bad, fired. Unfortunately, those things won’t happen, and that person will continue to lie to customers until they get fired for something else, or quit.

Tell you what, I’ll ammend my comment on your friend to simply “misinformed” and the GAME store employee as the one who is the ignoramus.

I’m sorry that you still believe that Sony would even consider stopping PS2 production any time soon. Give it some thought, and I’m sure you’ll realize that doing so would lose them millions of dollars. Most big companies, including Sony, would rather continue selling old products for big profit, then to cut off that profit center hoping to boost sales of their newest product. As I said earlier, PS2 sales are still selling very well, as are PS2 games. PS2 sales numbers are about equal to PS3, and their profit margin on PS2 is higher than PS3.

Yes, they will phase out the PS2 in a few years, slowly, just as they phased out the PS1. You won’t be able to stop that, and I see little reason for wanting to. Over those same years, PS3 games will proliferate and drop in price. The PS3 will continue to improve, change, and drop in price. By the time people are unable to purchase new PS2 and PS2 games, they’ll look at it the same way they look at the PS1 and PS1 games now… as a good system and games, but not your first choice.

But hey, I’m not an industry “insider” like that GAME store person supposedly is. You could be right about all this. Good luck with your group and getting Sony to not stop selling something they haven’t stopped selling.
