PS2/can’t read disc

Does anyone have any idea why our ps2 just stopped reading the disc’s? We have to fight with it to even read the disc to watch a movie. Is it just on it’s last leg? Can’t afford the ps3 yet so should we just get another ps2?

- Ah, the dreaded DRE. For the PS2, it’s like the Xbox’s Red Ring of Death. Sometimes it starts with one kind of disc, and allows you to read others, like it stops reading PS1, but plays PS2 fine, or vice versa. Inevitably, it will end up not reading anything. It’s a matter of when, not if. This is a well known problem with them, however, and Sony has been really good about it, even out of warranty for a lot of people (including me). First, call them up and go through the troubleshooting steps the tech takes you through. It’s possible that you will be offered a free repair (not including shipping it to them). At the very least, they will quote you a repair cost. In some cases, though, it’s cheaper to buy a used replacement or a PS2 slim, which supposedly doesn’t suffer from that problem. In any case, don’t assume they won’t help you out. It’s definitely worth calling Sony support before dropping the cash on a new one.

It’s not overheating or anything, it’s just premature failure of part of the PS2 that has to do with reading the discs. Sometimes people will open it up and increase the laser strength, or even replacing the laser/lens assembly. These should be last resorts, though. And don’t be afraid to play your console. There’s nothing that you can do “wrong” to make this problem happen. I know people who played many times more than me that never had the problem, and people who played less that also had it. It’s a problem with the machine that just happens, and Sony knows about it.

Humm my sons PS2 plays pretty well but there have been times that a disk will make a terrible noise and wont play the game but, you put different on in and it plays just fine?

Have you used a disk cleaner in the PS2? If you decide to get a new one I would be interested in the broken one. My borderline autistic son loves tinkering on things like this and I am always looking for broken items he can stay busy with and it not cost us a working item LOL.
